SOFTBALL WEEK COMING IN BELIZE
2010-11-02
For the second year in a row the Belize Softball Federation will stage “softball week.” From November 21-28 a number of activities will take place across the country, beginning and ending at Rogers Stadium.
As part of its celebrations, the Federation will be hosting a number of primary and secondary schools at an “Open House” at the Softball Headquarters and Secretariat at Rogers Stadium.
Also included on the programme for this year’s celebrations are softball games between the coaches of the various interoffice teams against the best players from the ongoing Interoffice Competition, the junior female all-stars from the Belize City Competition against the junior all-stars from the Cayo District, an invitational game between the ALICO players from the past against former male players from the past, as well as the National Female Team against a select team from the Interoffice Competition.
The Interoffice Softball Competition is co-ed modified fast pitch. Each team must field three female players at all times. They can have more but no less than three for any game. The pitching is shared between a female and a male pitcher. There are 12 teams in this year's competition and the teams are coached by (male and female) Belize National Softball Team players.
The veteran ALICO and veteran male game is fast pitch. These are retired players, including BSF President Patrick Henry and 1st Vice President Mr. Jude Lizama. (They both played for the ALICO organization for the better part of 15 years.)
The junior all-stars game (fast pitch) will involve junior female players ages 19-and-under from the ongoing Junior Girls Competition in Belize City, which will come to an end early next week. The all-stars team from Belize City will play against the Junior all-stars from the Cayo Softball Association.
The BSF’s “softball week” will climax on Sunday November 28, at Rogers Stadium with the 3rd Annual Charles Solis Memorial Championship, which is a fast pitch tournament named for the ISF Hall of Famer and former coach of Belize’s women’s national team. The (women’s) teams that will participate are the top four from the 20th national women's softball championship that was held in August.
The week will see the participation of the Minister of Sports, Hon. John Saldivar, Mr. Anthony Michael - Executive Director of the National Sports Council, Hon. Patrick Faber - Minister of Education and Youths, Mr. Edward "Ned" Pitts - President of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, ISF Hall of Fame members from Belize, and other softball personalities. |
