NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THIS WEEKEND
2009-08-28
It
would seem as though the wave of activity is over, now that numerous international softball events that took place around the world (primarily) in July and August are complete. But the sport just keeps playing on.
The 19th National Women’s Softball Championships take place this weekend (today, tomorrow, and Sunday) in Belize. The action begins at 7:00 tonight at Rogers Stadium, which the Belize Softball Federation calls home.
Just recently the women’s national softball team from Belize competed at the 20-nation VII Pan American Softball Championship for Women in Venezuela, but now it’s time for their national governing body to play host.
Play gets underway this evening with the Camalote Cristal Parrots (Cayo Sub-Champions) taking on Belize Telemedia (Belize City), followed by Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy (Cayo Champions) going up against Easy Does It of Flowers Bank (Belize Rural) in the nightcap.
Late last year internationalsoftball.com had reported on Belize Telemedia having played against a team from the USA that is in the top division in college play and whose coaching staff included an infielder from the 2004 Greek Olympic softball team.
The other teams participating in the 19th National Women’s Softball Championship are the Sandhill Sluggers (Belize Rural) and Lady Rebels Ascencion (Belize City). The tournament continues on Saturday at 10 am. The opening ceremony is slated for soon after that (at 1:15 pm).
On Sunday the games begin at 10 am.
There’s still more softball to be played in that part of the world later this year when Honduras, in December, hosts the 9th Central American Games, which will include both men’s and women’s (fast ptich) softball.
