TWO MORE WILL QUALIFY FOR WWC

From December 9-11, competition will take place in Harare, Zimbabwe, to determine which two African teams will advance to the International Softball Federation’s (ISF) XI Women’s World Championship. The latter event is scheduled for August 20-29, 2006 in Beijing, China, and will take place in the softball stadium currently being built for the 2008 Olympic Softball competition.

So far the teams that have confirmed participation at next month’s qualifier in Harare are Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, with the chance that more may still confirm.

The top two finishers will join China, Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Greece, Italy, Japan, and the Netherlands as teams that have qualified to compete at the ISF’s marquee event of 2006, along with the top five finishers from the 17-team VI Pan American Softball Championship for Women, the qualifying event for the Americas set to take place in Guatemala from November 26-December 3.

The final two teams that will participate in the Women’s World Championship (the ISF caps the number of countries at 16) will come from Oceania.

The ISF Women’s World Championship is one of the qualifiers for the Olympics.

The qualifier isn’t the only softball activity in Zimbabwe in December. From the 5th – 11th, an ISF umpire certification seminar will also be taking place there.
