SPREADING THE GAME
2011-04-15

The story has been told many times, but at least for purposes of putting it in a present (updated) context, the International Softball Federation has now sent more than USD$3 million to 99 countries around the world since 2002.

Bats, balls, gloves, helmets, catching gear, equipment bags, temporary bases, new equipment, used equipment; the ISF has been shipping various items to all five regions (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania) for going on a decade now.

Already in 2011 alone, the figures (including pending shipments) are $154,913 to 12 countries.

The ISF continues the call to colleges/universities, softball programs, and individuals for more equipment donations so as to ensure the program’s continued success. In the meantime, one of the member national federations has carried out similar activity.

Softball Canada recently donated two sets of uniforms to the Embassy of Canada in Havana, Cuba, for their softball team to wear during friendly competition. The Canadian Embassy softball team plays against other diplomatic missions in Cuba. The team was thrilled to receive the uniforms and proudly wear their country’s colors.

“To see the smiles and excitement in our team members is priceless,” said Jack Yuja, First Secretary and Vice-Consul of the Canadian Embassy in Cuba.

In a letter addressed to Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn, the Canadian Ambassador of Cuba wrote, “On behalf of the Embassy of Canada in Havana, Cuba, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation for the donation of uniforms sent by Softball Canada recently. This gesture is greatly appreciated by the team members who are proud to wear the Canadian colors to represent Canada in Cuba.”

Canadian aid was also seen earlier this year in donations from some of the teams that played in the Easton Foundations Youth World Cup (to some of their opponents).
