2010 ZONE 6 CHAMPIONSHIP NEARS
2010-09-30

This past weekend in Cape Town, South Africa – the site of next year’s ISF IX Jr. Women’s World Championship (December 6-17, 2011) – the inaugural (age) Under-23 National Provincial Championships concluded. The event was partnered by the City of Cape Town and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the Western Cape and saw seven women’s teams participating and four men’s teams.

Western Province won in women’s play, while Gauteng North was the men’s champion. Perhaps more importantly, however, was the fact that this tournament provided Softball South Africa with the chance to select the teams that will participate in the Zone 6 tournament in Lesotho at the end of October. The women’s selections include a few players who participated this past June at the ISF XII Women’s World Championship in Caracas, Venezuela.

The Zone 6 Championship is an annual tournament featuring men’s and women’s fast pitch softball. Last year the event took place in Harare, Zimbabwe, with the top three finishers in both categories having been (in this order) Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Lesotho’s women’s team came in fourth place. That edition had served as the African qualifying tournament for the aforementioned ISF event a few months ago in South America.

In other news from that region, this past weekend in South Africa also saw the 2010 edition of the Masters Tournament.
